History

Sacred Heart Primary School

"Scoil an Chroí Ró-Naofa"

The school is located in the market town of Granard, where a large Motte and Bailey stands, constructed in 1199 by Richard De Tuite. It is the ancestral home of the Sheridan Family.

In 1871, the Presentation Sisters came to Granard from North Great George's St., Dublin. They lived in Springlawn House opposite the workhouse. They were followed by the Sisters of Mercy and built the Convent in 1882. They opened the Granard Convent Girls' School in 1891. The present school was built on the old site by the Sisters of Mercy and officially opened in 1977. A learning room was added to the building in 1987.

In 1999 the Boys' School amalgamated with the Girls. The Senior classes, both boys and girls, were taught on "The Hill" and the Juniors were taught in the Girl's School. Both schools joined forces in September 2002 on the present Campus.

A large new extension comprising of a large P.E. Hall, Computer Room, Classroom, Resource Area and Staff Room were constructed and officially opened in April 2006. In 2017, two new classrooms and learning support rooms were added. The school further expanded in 2021 with the opening of the ASD Rainbow room and three new classrooms.

The School is situated in an urban setting and is currently part of DEIS Urban 1 Band. The school is a Catholic School but welcomes children of other denominations.

The School has a large playing area, astroturf and is well resourced with an excellent supply of Digital, P.E. and Science Equipment. It received the award of Digital School of Distinction in 2012.
