Sacred Heart Primary School, Granard, Co. Longford

Welcome

Sacred Heart Primary School in Granard is a DEIS Band 1 school situated in Barrack St., Granard. Our school has presently 231 pupils enrolled, with a staff of 21 teachers including 2 EAL teachers, 4 Special Education Teachers and a Home School Liaison Teacher.

Our principal is Mr. Francis Gray and our Deputy Principal is Ms. Carmel Shaughnessy.

We participate in the First Steps English Programme. This specifically targets improved reading, writing and oral language skills. All teachers have been trained in the Incredible Years Programme which promotes the children’s social and emotional competence.

We have a Home School Liaison teacher whose principal job is to liaise with parents, especially when children start school to ensure that they are settling in. She also arranges initiatives for parents such as Maths for Fun, Shared Reading etc. The school has full access to a NEPS educational psychologist, so if a child needs to be assessed, parent will not have to cover the cost.

Sacred Heart Primary School places emotional health and wellbeing at the forefront of our Personal Development programme. We run a successful Wellbeing week for both teachers and pupils annually.

Our sixth class participate in the Digital Excellence Programme, “Lego We Do” Project in collaboration with 7 other schools. This fantastic initiative enhances pupils’ curiosity and skills in computing and science.

In September 2021 we opened our first class for children with autism, called The Rainbow Classroom. We are extremely proud of this development as we in Sacred Heart have been advocating the sanction of a special class for many years. In September 2023, we opened an Early Intervention Class.

We have a Homework Club in operation which is available to Infants from 1.40-3.40p.m. and 1st- 6th Class from 2.40-3.40 p.m. each evening supervised by teachers who give help when needed. We are aware of the many demands on parents financially, so we strive to keep costs to a minimum. There are no voluntary subscriptions; we operate a Book Rental Scheme and the School Hot Meals Programme. Parents are given access to an online app where they can chose a hot daily meal from a large and varied menu. This is all provided free of charge to pupils.
